Curriculum
The curriculum provided by Corwen Day Nursery includes the following:
- Physical Development
- Emotional, Personal and Social Development
- Communication and Language
- Knowledge of the World
- Mathematical Development
- Expressive Development
- Special Educational Needs
Physical Development
Opportunities for energetic activity will be provided daily and the outdoor area allows children to develop skills in jumping, climbing, balancing, riding bicycles and ball games. Sensitive planting allows children to appreciate the changing seasons in nature and a sensory garden will encourage exploration through smell and touch.
Emotional, Personal and Social Development
Children will be able to express their needs and warmth confidently and will experience a warm and caring relationship with staff. As they progress with us the children will gradually learn to become more independent and to form positive relationships with others, particularly other children. Through social play the children come to appreciate the importance of taking others needs and feelings into account in their own actions. They will learn to care for both the immediate environment and the wider world around them, through work in the garden and with mini beasts and plants.
Communication and Language
Members of staff encourage children to listen to both adults and other children in conversation, to talk confidently in a variety of situations, to develop an enthusiasm for books of all kinds and to develop early literacy skills. Children will be read to daily in both individual and group situations. A library is available from which parents and children together can choose from a variety of titles in both Welsh and English to share together at home.
Knowledge of the World
Children are active learners, learning through investigating, experimenting, designing and making their own models and constructions, exploring sand, water and other materials. Children also develop an understanding of the wider environment – the changing seasons and the natural world through outings in the local community and walks. Working in the nursery garden by planting, weeding and tending to seeds allows for the observation of plants and mini beasts.
Mathematical Development
Understanding of early mathematical concepts such as numbers, measurements, size and shape is encouraged through activities involving sorting, matching, comparing and making patterns and sequences. Activities such as baking, planting, board games, number songs and rhymes are featured regularly in the nursery curriculum along with role play and the development of early mathematical and scientific thoughts.
Special Educational Needs
The nursery has regard for the Special Educational Needs Code of practice and we appreciate that providing effective support for children with SEN is an effective feature of our nursery. When a child starts at nursery a member of staff will talk to the parent about their child and will use this information to compile a profile sheet. Any existing special educational needs, disabilities or health problems will be noted at this time.
It is the aim of the nursery that each child should realise his / her maximum potential in a caring supporting environment that provides equal opportunities. We want any child with SEN to reach their full potential and to be included within the nursery community as much as is practically possible and will be offered full access to a broad, balanced and relevant education.
