All members of staff receive induction training which includes going through the child protection policy and health and safety procedures. All members of staff are either, fully qualified in childcare or are training towards a childcare qualification and have not been selected just for the qualifications they hold, but also for their exceptional personal qualities and their genuine love for children and dedication to their job and all it involves. As the nursery is situated in a rural Welsh speaking environment, we have a positive approach to recruiting Welsh speaking staff, and therefore offer the facility through a bilingual medium.
Continual professional development and training is very important and an ongoing priority, thus staff regularly attend training courses to improve their skills, which allow the nursery to provide the best quality care of the highest standard. All members of staff are; First Aid trained, have received training in understanding and managing challenging behaviour, DBS checked, have received fire awareness and manual handling training, hold a Food Safety certificate and have had child protection training and foundation phase training. We hold monthly staff meetings to discuss many points and room leaders hold regular departmental meetings. Some members of staff have spent some time in other settings to learn from their procedures and pick up some ideas. We are proud that labour turnover is exceptionally low and many members of staff have worked at the nursery for a number of years.
Our staff enjoy their work and receive an annual appraisal to give us the opportunity to look at their strengths and weaknesses as well as looking at how we see them progressing within the nursery. Regular job chats take place as well as observations. We have introduced an “employee of the month” scheme where a member of staff has the opportunity of receiving this award for going above and beyond what is expected of them. Staff will observe children, play alongside them and support them in their individual play to build on what they already know and encourage them to learn new skills. Staff will have knowledge of children’s development and use this to observe and assess children’s progress and plan for children’s next steps. Learning journeys are produced for each child and discussed with parents at parents evening. The nursery has recently invested in some software to assist with observations of children. All members of staff have received training from Shonette Bason Wood who is an experienced teacher and makes learning fun, she often sends ideas on fun activities for us to undertake at the nursery and dough disco and squiggle whilst you wiggle which was introduced by Shonette to strengthen muscles in the hand to assist young children with holding a pen to write takes place daily.
Corwen Day Nursery works closely with parents in partnership resulting in a culture of co-operation between the nursery and parents. Parents hold key information and have a critical role to play in their child’s education and our work will be more effective when parents are involved, and account will be taken of their wishes, feelings and perspectives on their child’s development. We will endeavour to ensure that we can accommodate any particular wishes parents may have for their child. Daily diaries are completed for the children in the baby room and preschool room and given to the parents at the end of each day. All members of staff will speak with the parents at the beginning and end of each day. A newsletter is issued to parents every other month detailing what we have achieved, any changes made within the setting, future plans and forthcoming events. We regularly post on our face book page to give parents confidence in what we do and it allows parents to view the activities that their children have been involved in. We host a mince pie and mulled wine night at Christmas as well as an annual open / parents evening where parents are invited in to discuss their child’s milestones and review their child’s learning journey with the key worker. Te, coffee and cake are available on the night along with samples from our fantastic menu.
A key worker system is in operation where each child is allocated to a particular member of staff and will receive more personal care. This person will take special responsibility for knowing the child and is the first point of contact for parents. Information about the child’s day and any other special messages will be given by the key person to parents at the end of the nursery day and the child’s key person will work closely with the parent in the various stages of development.
Hello I’m Carmen and I am the proud owner of Corwen Day Nursery. I have a degree in Business Management and up until 2008 spent my working life as a financial controller in hotels. When I had my first son back in 2000 I was a customer of Corwen Day Nursery. I bought the business in 2008 whilst on maternity leave with my second son and learnt it was going to close. I love my job and with my fantastic team I will ensure that quality child care is always delivered and will always strive for excellence by constantly reviewing the service. I attend all NDNA conferences to keep abreast of any changes and I am the network chair for Denbighshire. I also attend the meetings held by Denbighshire Family Information Service including their annual conference. We have many exciting plans for the future and I will continue to move the nursery forward. Although I live and breathe the nursery I do enjoy spending time walking in the Lake District.
Hello I’m Nia and Carmen employed me a week after she acquired the nursery back in 2008. I began studying NVQ Level 2 in Children’s Care, Learning and Development and this was quickly followed by NVQ Level 3 which I passed in 2012 and was then awarded the title of Nursery Manager which I am extremely proud of. I achieved my Level 5 in April 2015. Delivering the highest standard of care is of paramount importance to me and I support Carmen, staff, parents and children. I work in the kitchen two days per week and have two admin days. I undertook IOSH training and am responsible for Health and Safety and carry out appraisals and observations on the staff. I have a teenage daughter and a son in primary school and I enjoy walking my dogs locally and cooking.
Hi I’m Hanna and I have worked at the nursery for over 6 years and have recently been promoted to Deputy Manager because I support Carmen by promoting the work that we do on British values and oversee the planning for the whole nursery. I have always worked in the preschool room and enjoy the challenge of getting children ready for school. I am enthusiastic and passionate in my work; caring for all the children as well as helping them to grow and become independent. I love to provide children with new opportunities which will inspire them. I completed my NNEB Diploma in Nursery Nursing after I left school and I have three children of my own. In my spare time I enjoy eating out and walking my dog and like to visit my sister in the South of France as often as I can.
Hello I’m Cheryl and I have been working at Corwen Day Nursery for over 12 years after passing my CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education. I have worked in all areas within the nursery but I have run the baby room since 2008 which is where I thrive. I find it really rewarding to see a child settled at nursery and if I have been able to reassure a parent that their little one has been left in the safest of hands and goes to work knowing that their child is going to have an amazing day at nursery. I support other members of staff with the use of the Welsh Language and any behavioural issues that they may have. I am extremely organised and I like my room to be clean and tidy. I have one son in primary school and I enjoy going on holiday abroad.
Hi I’m Tracey and I have worked at the nursery since 2008 and I work in the baby room. I love the bond that we have with the children and I spend as much time as possible outside and enjoy taking the babies for walks and any form of messy play. I have recently passed my NVQ Children’s Care, Learning and Development Level 3. I have three children and am extremely passionate about football and do a great deal to help with Corwen football club.
Hi I’m Amy and I returned to the nursery in 2012 after a short spell of caring for the elderly. I am a new mother to Will who is cared for in the baby room whilst I support Tara in the preschool room two days a week. I have a BA (Hons) in Childhood Studies and a BTEC National Diploma in Early Years. I am really caring, have lots of patience and enjoy doing art and craft with the children. In my spare time I enjoy keeping fit and spending time in the gym.
Hi I’m Ffion and I have recently passed my Level 2 NVQ Children’s Care Learning and Development and plan to continue with my level 3 whilst working part time at the nursery. I am based in the baby room but also work in the After School and Holiday Club when needed. I have a little girl who attends nursery and we enjoy travelling and spending time together. My hobbies are swimming and Hockey and I am part of the Bala Hockey team.

Hi I am Heather and I work with the toddlers. I am currently studying for my NVQ Level 2 in Children’s Care Learning and Development. I like to be organised and get involved with the children especially when doing art and craft. I have a teenage daughter and I look forward to holidaying abroad in the summer holidays.
It's difficult to put into words the amazing and caring person that Hanna is. She is approachable and very understanding and no matter what your need is, she always does her best to help. She has changed my little boy for the better and helped him develop greatly personally, socially and educationally. When he's feeling down she comforts him and he absolutely adores her, this is a huge comfort to myself and my husband who have to work, but feel happy knowing our son is in the best hands. On starting school it was commented that our son had good basic skills knowledge, and we have no doubt that this us because of the fantastic focus skills work Hanna does with them in the nursery, she is an exceptional individual and we are very lucky to have her in our child's life. Thank you Hanna for your dedication and hard work.
Cheryl has looked after my son who has development delays. She has always been there for him and has gone above and beyond what we would have expected.
Hanna is calm and loving - exactly the kind of person you feel comfortable leaving your most precious little ones with. She was with my daughter when she first started nursery, and again now that she has moved up with the older ones. Hanna always has time to hear how your child is at the start of the day, and never fails to let you know how they've been and what they've been up to through the day. I know that my daughter is in the best hands when I leave her for the day - I couldn't leave her with anyone else.

Hanna has always been very supportive and caring to both of our children. the first time I met Hanna was when I called without prior appointment to collect an information pack and without hesitation she welcomed my daughter and I and showed us around the nursery.
Cheryl is a kind and caring individual. She is the perfect person to have to give your baby over to when you have to leave them in order to work. Her smile and kindness is always evident, nothing is too much of a task and you can approach her with anything whether it's big or small and she will always help. Our son absolutely loved Cheryl and myself and my husband believe she gave him the best start in his life. He was cared for and stimulated and always happy, he couldn't wait to see her every day. Cheryl is a special person and we are grateful to her for the wonderful start she gave to our son and look forward to our newborn receiving this same care from her when she starts at the nursery.
